Two people have been taken to hospital after three cars collided early this morning causing long delays for motorists and one lane to be closed.

Emergency services were called to the A19 Northbound junction with Passfield Way in Peterlee to reports of a collision just after 7:30am.

Traffic was reported to be backed up for a few miles after one lane was closed, leaving motorists with delays of up to ten minutes whilst police and ambulance workers attended the scene.

The road was re-opened and clear by 10am, after police recovered two of the three vehicles involved in the crash.

Durham Constabulary and the North East Ambulance Service confirmed they attended the scene.

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 7.31am this morning (Wednesday 23 August) to reports of a road traffic incident on the A19 northbound junction with Passfield Way, Peterlee.

“We dispatched two ambulance crews who transported one patient to the Sunderland Royal Hospital, and another to the University Hospital of North Tees for further treatment."

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: “Police were called at 7.30am to reports of a three-vehicle collision on the A19 (northbound), near Easington.

“Officers and colleagues from the ambulance service attended.

“Two vehicles were recovered from the scene.”
