A recent study has revealed which beaches in the North East are the dirtiest – is your favourite on the list?

As we begin to draw the final curtain on summer, there are still chances to visit the beach and have a day out at the seaside.

The North East boasts plenty of beaches from Amble in Northumberland to Saltburn which lies just over the North Yorkshire border.

However, a new study has been released that shows the overall water quality of five beaches across the region, also detailing which ones you could avoid.

Here are the five dirtiest beaches in the North East, according to rubbish removal company Clear It Waste.

5. Saltburn Beach, North Yorkshire

Saltburn comes in with a score of 8.4 out of 10 for its water cleanliness and is a highly popular visit for tourists and locals year-round.

The seafront features rentable beach huts and plenty of local cafes to grab a bite to eat.

Visitors can also take a ride on the Saltburn Cliff Tramway and enjoy incredible views of the whole seaside before walking along the pier or the Saltburn Cliffs.

4. Seaham Hall Beach, County Durham

According to Clear It Waste, Seaham Hall Beach has an overall ranking of 8.3 out of 10.

The beach, located in County Durham is always a busy spot for locals with free parking making it a cheap day out for all.

Visitors to Seaham can often be seen searching for sea glass or peering inside the beautiful rock pools looking for sea creatures.

3. Seaton Carew Beach, Hartlepool

The final score for Seaton Carew is 8.2 out of 10 for water quality, coming in 3rd place for the region.

Seaton Carew’s expansive seafront is often popular with dog walkers who use the space to throw tennis balls for their pets.

2. Marsden, South Tyneside

In second place, further up in the region is Marsden with a score of 7.6 out of ten, 0.6 lower than Seaton Carew.

Marsden is just further down the shore from South Shields and Sandhaven Beach, which is usually popular due to the Ocean Beach Park.

1. Tynemouth Cullercoats, North Tyneside

Cullercoats Beach comes in with a score of 7 out of ten for water cleanliness in this study.

The small beach with picturesque cliffs is popular with university students who often travel to the area for the Tynemouth market and a trip to the shore.
