Northumbrian Water has announced they will be investing £10m into a treatment facility that supplies water to 800,000 people across the North East.
The company will invest the funds in Mosswood Water Treatments Works (WTW), near Consett, which provides supplies to County Durham, South Tyneside, Washington as well as areas in Sunderland and North Tyneside.
Included in the investment are upgraded power systems, increased chemical storage facilities, as well as a new lagoon that is expected to be finished in the Spring of 2024.

Works also feature 12 “ultraviolet units”, said to support long-term quality improvement. These units had already been trialed at Moswood, as well as in Lumley before they being confirmed as a new permanent upgrade.
Northumbrian Water project manager, Lowri Robbins said: “Delivering clean, clear and great-tasting tap water for our customers is vital.
“This collection of works represents a significant investment in Mosswood Water Treatment Works, that will deliver for our customers, now and into the future, as well as for the environment.”
