Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a man was found at a flat on Monday (August 14). 

Emergency services were called to an address in Gateshead at around 9am following reports for concern of a man's welfare.

When officers arrived on the scene, alongside paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Where was the incident?

The incident was on Tennyson Court on Sunderland Road in Gateshead.

When was the incident?

The incident happened at around 9am on Monday (August 14), although paramedics were at the scene before then after reports of concerns for a man's welfare.

What has happened?

Officers attended the scene and found a man in his 40s who had sustained serious head injuries.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced as deceased.

Has there been any arrests?

Yes - a 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

What has Northumbria Polcie said?

His next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specialist officers.  

A full investigation has been launched and officers are treating the man’s death as murder.

The senior investigating officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Angela Hudson, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

“We will support them in any way we can as they come to terms with their loss.”

DCI Hudson added: “This is a tragic incident and a number of enquiries are being carried out to determine exactly what happened.

“Although we believe the incident to be an isolated one, officers remain in the Tennyson Court area to offer reassurance to the public and carry out enquiries to assist with the ongoing investigation.

What has the police told members of the public to do?

DCI Hudson said: “I would ask that members of the public assist us by getting in touch if they have any information regarding the man’s death.

“Please be aware that information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence.”
