A man has been left with serious injuries after he fell from a cliff onto rocks.

Emergency crews descended on the coastline at Seaton Sluice in Northumberland on Tuesday (August 15) morning after the man fell 10 to 15 ft onto rocks.

Crowds gathered as the Coastguard rescue helicopter was called to the scene at the popular walking spot while ambulance and life brigade teams helped the man.

Due to his position on the rock the chopper was used to lift the man to safety at a nearby football pitch before he could be taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) said: “It is relatively rare that we seek helicopter assistance but narrow coastal paths, large rocks and the exposed nature of where the casualty had fallen meant such help was needed for this call.

“Once on scene the helicopter winched the casualty onboard, before flying him to a nearby football pitch, where the rescue teams were again on hand to assist in the transfer to an ambulance.
