Police remain at the scene of a North East tower block, where a murder investigation is underway after the body of a man was found.
Officers received a report from the ambulance service of concern for a male at Tennyson Court, on Sunderland Road, at 9am yesterday.
Police attended the scene and found a man in his 40s who had sustained serious head injuries.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead.
His next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specialist officers. A full investigation has been launched and officers are treating the man’s death as murder.
Today the area remained cordoned off, as floral tributes were left at the scene.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
The senior investigating officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Angela Hudson, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
“We will support them in any way we can as they come to terms with their loss.”

DCI Hudson added: “This is a tragic incident and a number of enquiries are being carried out to determine exactly what happened.
“Although we believe the incident to be an isolated one, officers remain in the Tennyson Court area to offer reassurance to the public and carry out enquiries to assist with the ongoing investigation.
