A vehicle fire closed one lane of the busy A1 motorway this morning (Monday, August 7) while emergency services dealt with a vehicle fire.

Motorists were delayed this morning on the A1(M) after a Mercedes caught fire at around 9am, caused by what is believed to have been an electrical fault.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the blaze on the Northbound side of the road between J53 at Scotch Corner and J56 at Hang Bank.

An AA Traffic statement confirmed the closure: "One lane closed and slow traffic due to vehicle fire on A1(M) Northbound from J53 A66 (Scotch Corner) to J56 B6275 Hang Bank (Barton)."

The fire service has now confirmed that multiple crews were called to the incident, to tackle the fire, as it remains unknown whether anyone was injured.

A statement from the North Yorkshire Fire Service reads: "We received a call about a car on fire on the A1 at about 09:08. Crews from Colburn, Richmond and Darlington were requested to attend.

"On their arrival, they found a Mercedes on fire. The fire started in the engine compartment and was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

"Crews used breathing apparatus, a hose reel and a thermal imaging camera."

The road has now repoened.
