A woman has been arrested after a serious assault saw a man taken to hospital and an area of Durham City Centre cordoned off by police.
Durham's Market Square was the scene of an altercation between a man and a woman at around 2 pm today (Saturday, August 5).
Following the assault, police arrested the woman, and erected a cordon from Tesco Express to Cafe Nero on Silver Street. At the time, police advised shoppers that there may be some disruption, but the cordon has since been taken down.
One man was taken to hospital by ambulance for an injury to his back.
In a statement, a Durham City police spokesperson said: "Police were called around 2 pm following a serious assault this afternoon. A man suffered an injury to his back and has been taken to hospital.

"A woman has since been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in custody.
"Officers believe this is an isolated incident. A cordon was in place between Tesco and Cafe Nero in Silver Street, but has now been taken down with access restored.
"Officers aim to keep disruption to a minimum.
"If anyone witnessed the incident or has information that could assist officers, please call 101 quoting incident reference 201 of August 5."
