Darlington’s indoor market suffered a break-in overnight with money reportedly taken from one trader.

Police were seen at the market on Friday (August 4) morning with staff crowded around outside.

Traders were allowed back into the market at around 10am after police had assessed the scene.

Sandwich shop Sides, which only opened on June 1, is believed to have been the only stall affected by the break-in.

Sides’ manager Ory Vanes told The Northern Echo: “We own sides and PP’s but sides was the only one affected.

“We don’t know what has gone on so we can’t really comment on how it has happened but we have been broken into and by the looks of it they have taken some cash.

“We only opened on June 1.

“We are just waiting for the forensics to come now. We don’t know exactly what’s been taken yet.

“I got a phone call from the manager of the building this morning who told me we had been broken into.”

Jon Mullen from neighbouring trader SpudGun said: “Luckily we don’t seem to have had anything taken.

“I don’t know how they’ve got in because it’s all locked up overnight."

Staff at The Bumble Crumble said they had arrived at 7.30am but had only been allowed into their premises at 10am.
