Taking in the views of the Lake District is one of the main reasons we have all travelled there at one time or another, to see the quaint villages and impressive natural surroundings.

Whether you’re an avid walker, or simply want to enjoy some scenic photo opportunities for little cost, Windermere Marina Village has shared five places around the lakes you can park for free, with access to incredible views to enjoy your next staycation.

Each location is around a 2-hour drive from County Durham.

Noble Knott, Whinlatter Forest

From here, you can see the stunning view from Noble Knott spans across Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding peaks.

It provides numerous trails to explore for all abilities, immersing explorers in diverse flora and fauna.

Noble Knott car park has 20 free parking spaces, with an ice cream van during summer months, which can be found following a tight bend on the B5292.

Wansfell Pike from Troutbeck

With limited roadside parking available in the village itself, this popular and gentle walk 2.5 mile through Troutbeck leads up to Wansfell Pike and gives you wide-ranging views across the surrounding peaks.

But before you ascend, you’ll enjoy winding through picturesque woodlands and charming countryside scenery.

Rannerdale Knotts

Known famously for its blanket of bluebells in spring, Rannerdale Knotts is home to some spectacular scenes all year around.

The area is rich in folklore and history, with tales of battles fought on these slopes during the Norman period, meaning you’ll witness the heritage and natural beauty in one place.

You can find free parking in the National Trust car park at the foot, where you’ll also enjoy the picturesque Crummock Water.

Ennerdale Water

Ennerdale is a picturesque glacial lake spanning approximately 2.5 miles in length, surrounded by pristine wilderness.

It offers a serene and unspoiled environment for nature lovers and hikers alike. You can access free nearby parking at Bowness Knott car park.

It’s a great place to switch off from the everyday busyness of life, with the remote setting contributing to the lake's untouched beauty, without major roads or developments nearby.

Where to park: Bowness Knott Car Park

Kirkstone Pass

The highest mountain range in the district, located between Windermere and Ullswater, Kirkstone Pass has 68 free parking spaces opposite the local Inn.

Renowned for its scenic beauty and challenging driving conditions, it offers breathtaking vistas of rugged mountains and serene lakes.

Offering walking routes for all abilities, you can also just stop for some great photo opportunities along the driving routes.
