Two people have tragically died after a car collided with a tree early this morning (July 29) on a County Durham road.
Two people have lost their lives after a car crashed into a tree on Whitworth Lane in Spennymoor early this morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 7am after a black Jeep Cherokee collided with a tree.
A man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
A second female passenger is said to have suffered serious injuries and has been taken to James Cook University Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.
Police have now launched an investigation into the crash as they appeal to the public for information and dash cam footage.
They are asked to contact Durham Police on 101, quoting incident number 115 from July 29.
At the time of the incident, an ambulance service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 06.45 am today (July 29) to attend a road traffic collision on Whitworth Lane near Page Bank.
"We dispatched a paramedic ambulance crew, a clinical team leader, two Hazardous Area Response Team crews and a doctor.
"We treated one patient with hip and leg injuries before taking them to James Cook Hospital."
