Work to demolish a derelict amusement arcade and create a new public space in Bishop Auckland will begin next week.
Durham County Council will commence demolition of the building located at 58-59 Fore and North Bondgate on Monday (24 July).
Following the demolition, a new public space will be established with seating areas and greenery creating a safe and welcoming space.

It will also improve the connectivity between the two streets making it easier for visitors to access the range of independent shops and businesses in both areas.
Cllr Elizabeth Scott, Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: “The former amusement arcade has stood vacant for many years and has been described as an eyesore by the local community.
“We are pleased to begin work on demolishing the site to create a new welcoming public space that will link up the two streets and increase footfall to the town centre. The project will contribute to our ambitious plans to transform the town into a thriving visitor destination.”
The development is a key project within the Future High Streets Fund programme to regenerate the town. It is hoped the work will be complete in early 2024.

In March, the first images of how a new County Durham STACK entertainment venue could look were revealed.
Plans for the new site on Newgate Street, near the Market Place, were approved in March and involve demolishing the former butcher’s shop and WH Smith store on the town’s main shopping street.
A new 'social hub' building will be built, housing a selection of bars and street food operators around a central ‘plaza’ area. Offering daily live entertainment and a platform for local businesses, STACK intends to add vibrancy and a contemporary twist not experienced previously in the town.
