The streets of Durham were filled with the sound of music over the weekend as street bands entertained visitors with a series of free performances.

Durham Brass Festival has been a week of spectacular performances, new commissions, free concerts, street bands and community activities across the whole of the county.

The eclectic programme of free and ticketed events has been taking place in major venues and open-air spaces all week.

The festival culminated this weekend with the hugely popular two-day Streets of Brass. Several old favourites and acts making their debuts took the streets of Durham city centre with 11 world-leading brass bands entertaining the crowds - sometimes in the pouring rain.

Highlights included a rusing performance from Girlesque, who performed in Durham Marlet Place on Saturday morning. 

Badcorehorns, in ttheir brightly coloured outfits, braved some of the worst of the weather and the Redhills Youth Brass Band entertained outside the Gala Theatre in Millenium Square.

Music also featured in the Durham City Run Festival - also taking place over the weekend - with Artistas Del Gremio perfoming at the 'Paula's Families on Track' event at Durham Racecourse.

There was plent more happening across the week. Durham Gala Theatre, Consett Empire Theatre and Durham Town Hall hosted the festival’s ticketed events, bringing unique cultural experiences to communities across County Durham.

Free gigs will be took place throughout the week in the region’s public and community spaces, including Wharton Park (Durham), Hackworth Park (Shildon), Glenholme Park (Crook), Trimdon Community College, Town Centre Park (Newton Aycliffe) and Spennymoor Marketplace.

One of the highlights was provided by the WFEL Fairey Band, who performed two events at this year’s festival, both celebrating iconic film music.

On Saturday, the multi-award-winning band took to the stage at Gala Durham for a very special celebration of the iconic short film, Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers.

The band then made their way to Consett Empire Theatre for an evening of traditional brass followed by some of the most iconic scores from stage and screen.

The ever-popular Durham City Run, on Friday and Saturday, coincided with the brass festival. Hundreds of competitors raced through the city centre - accompanied by live music from the Streets of Brass bands.
