Darlington Library has put together an impressive range of cheap activities for families to get involved with this summer.

Creative craft workshops and storytelling afternoons will be running throughout the holiday.

Some events will require booking ahead of time.

Tales with a Pirate

On July 26, families will have the opportunity to meet 'the coolest pirate in town'.

Captain Raggy Beard will be telling his story from 2pm until 3pm at Cockerton Library.

A spokesperson said: "Captain Raggy Beard is the most fantastic storyteller who will make you feel like a REAL pirate and take you on a voyage of imagination arghhhh!"

Tickets cost £5 per child.

Coding Class

On July 25, there will be a workshop running to teach youngsters how to create a stop-motion film.

The lessons will be run every Tuesday and will provide cool challenges throughout the summer months.

The recommended age for the sessions is 6+ and tickets will be £2.

Touch Creepy Crawlies

Youngsters will have the chance to get up close and personal with tarantulas, snails and cockroaches in an interactive session.

On July 27 there will be two sessions for children to be introduced to a range of creatures.

Tickets will cost £5 and the event will be run at Cockerton Library.

A spokesperson said: "How slimy is a snail? Are tarantulas terrifying? Do cockroaches give you the creeps? Get up-close and hands-on with our unique Animal Explorer workshop.

"Guided by your expert ZooLab Ranger, you'll meet a menagerie of mammals, insects, amphibians and arachnids.

"Will you be brave enough to touch them all?"

Shadow Puppet workshop

Hear the story of Little Red Riding Hood told with Robin Simpson's stunning shadow puppets.

After the familiar tale Robin will then teach his audience how to create their own cast of puppets.

This workshop will be held on August 17 from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Try a magic show

One of the North East's top magic talents, Graeme Shaw, is visiting Darlington Library to give a show on August 16.

The show will be from 2.00pm to 3.00pm and he is even bringing his trusty racoon along with him.
