A teenager has been arrested in connection with a crash that saw a child rushed to hospital after he was hit by an e-bike earlier this week.

A three-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being hit by a teenager riding an e-bike as he and his mother crossed the road with a lollipop lady on Monday (July 10).

Police initially said the teenager who was wearing all black clothing did not stop and fled the scene near Christ the King Roman Catholic Primary School in Thornaby, Stockton.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident in Tedder Avenue at 3.30pm.

While the boy's injuries were initially thought to be serious they turned out to be only minor cuts and bruises.

Cleveland Police have now confirmed today (July 13) that a  19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the collision involving the three-year-old child.

They added that the man remains in police custody at this time and enquiries are ongoing.

At the time of the collision, a Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "A three-year-old boy was knocked to the ground by a teenager riding an e-bike on Tedder Avenue at 3.30pm this afternoon, Monday 10th July.

"The toddler and his mother were crossing with the lollipop lady, near to Christ the King RC Primary School, when a teenager wearing all black clothing, continued to ride over the crossing and knocked the toddler to the ground.

"His injuries, whilst initially thought to be serious, turned out to be only minor cuts and bruises.

"However, he was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees to be checked over and for an x-ray on his arm."

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service added at the time: "We received a call at 3.23pm this afternoon (Monday 10 July) to reports of a road traffic incident involving a young child on Tedder Avenue in Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and requested the support of our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by road.

"One patient was then taken to hospital by road for further treatment."
