A man has appeared in court charged following a bar incident that left a man seriously injured.

Richard Smith-Slater, 33, of Bury Road, Newton Aycliffe, appeared before magistrates accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

His appearance at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates's Court comes after an incident at Blakes Bar on Beveridge Way shortly before 7pm on Saturday (June 8).

A man in his 50s was injured and taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where he remains in a serious condition.

Mr Smith-Slater was not asked to plead and he was remanded in custody to appear at Durham Crown Court on August 9.

Durham Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward and assist in their enquiries.

A Force spokesperson said earlier: "Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward following a serious assault in a Newton Aycliffe bar at the weekend.

"The incident took place at Blake’s Bar, on Beveridge Way, shortly before 7pm, on Saturday, July 8.

"There were several people in the premises at the time and detectives are particularly keen to speak to a group of people sat at a table to the left of the entrance.

"Anyone who helped the victim is also asked to get in touch.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any mobile phone footage is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 489 of July 8.
