A man has been charged with attempted murder following a disturbance on a residential Darlington street which left a woman with serious injuries.

A 33-year-old man will appear at Teesside Magistrates Court tomorrow (Saturday, July 8) charged with attempted murder, arson with recklessness to endanger life and malicious communications.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of his appearance.

The 33-year-old was arrested following the incident in Ridsdale Street, in Darlington, on the morning of June 8 in which a woman in her thirties sustained serious injuries.

Emergency services attended Ridsdale Street and Louisa Street in the town at around 10.15 am following reports of an assault. 

The Great North Air Ambulance was sent to the scene - with the emergency services confirming that a woman was taken to hospital via road ambulance with serious injuries.

She was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, for treatment and has since been discharged to continue her recovery at home.

On the day of the incident, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a fire occurred at the scene at around.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Fire crews were called at 10.50 am to reports of a fire in Ridsdale Street, Darlington.

"Two appliances from Darlington, and Newton Aycliffe attended the incident. Our crews extinguished the fire within the property and left the scene shortly after 1 pm.”

The suspect also suffered significant injuries following the incident and remained in hospital until today (Friday, July 7) when he was discharged into police custody for questioning.
