A major North East road will experience night closures for three weeks after National Highways revealed a raft of improvements.

The A19 near Stockton on Tees is being resurfaced on the southbound carriageway between the junctions with the A1027 and the A1046 Portrack Interchange.

To complete the improvements safely, this section of the southbound carriageway is due to be closed between 8pm and 6am for six nights a week, excluding Saturdays.

This work is due to be carried out over three weeks, and will  begin on Sunday, July 16.

National Highways Project Manager, Michael Morgan, said: “It’s really important that we maintain busy routes such as the A19 so they remain safe for everyone. Once the resurfacing is complete, drivers will notice much smoother journeys.”

“We’re carrying out this work overnight, when traffic levels are lightest. However, we advise people planning to travel during the closures to follow the signposted diversions and allow extra time for their journeys.”

While the resurfacing is carried out, traffic will be diverted via the A1027, A177, A1305 and A1046 Portrack Lane to re-join the A19 at Portrack Interchange.

A daytime 50mph speed limit will be in place for traffic running on temporary surfaces.
