The incident occurred on Yarm Road near Cummins around 3pm today (Wednesday, June 28).
The bust water main has caused no interruption to supply, domestic or commercial, The Northern Echo understands.
Northumbrian Water will continue to work overnight with a road closure expected to be in place until Sunday (July 2).
Drivers are urged to avoid the area and diversions are in place.
