A family have thanked emergency services and medical staff for helping a grandfather who lost a leg in a horrific motorcycle crash.
Bernard O'Mahoney spoke for the family as his his father-in-law Malcolm Tierney recovers in hospital from after he was in a collision with a car in Consett, County Durham, on Thursday (June 22).
The 72-year-old was airlifted to the hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance after being treated at the scene for his injuries.
Mr Tierney, who was riding a Kawasaki Vulcan bike, in a collison with collided with a Honda Jazz car on the A692 in Consett.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 4.30pm on Thursday after a Honda Jazz car collided with his Kawasaki Vulcan bike on the A692.
Mr O'Mahoney said: “Although Malcolm has suffered serious injuries, including the loss of his leg, he is thankfully doing okay in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
"Malcolm, his daughter Roshea (my wife) and all of our family would like to thank everyone who helped him, including Durham Police the air ambulance, ambulance crews and all the staff in the high dependency unit at Newcastle’s RVI hospital.
Malcolm is no spring chicken. What they have done for him is amazing. We are really grateful."
Mr O'Mahoney said: “We got a call from the police who spoke to my wife and said we had better get here soon because they were concerned for his well-being.
"We traveled up from our home in Lincoln. as soon as we heard the news and have been overwhelmed by the help and support we have received from everyone. Thank you."
Mr O'Mahoney said Mr Tierney, a retired electrician of Gateshead, had been a motorcyclist his whole life.
A Durham Police spokesperson said earlier: "Police were called to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A692 in Consett at around 4.45pm on Thursday(June 22).
"The incident involved a Honda Jazz car and a Kawasaki Vulcan motorbike.
"The motorbike rider, a man in his 70s, sustained a serious leg injury and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment where he remains.
"The driver of the car, a woman in her 80s, was unharmed.
"The road was closed for several hours before being reopened at around 10pm. Enquiries are ongoing."
A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A692 in Consett shortly after 4.30pm this afternoon.
"We dispatched one ambulance crew, a rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.
"One patient was flown to the RVI for further treatment."
