A motorcyclist remains in hospital with serious injuries after a crash with a car in Couty Durham yesterday (Thursday, June 22), police have confirmed. 

The man, who was riding a Kawasaki Vulcan bike, was airlifted to hospital after he collided with a Honda Jazz car on the A692 in Consett.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 4.30pm and the road was closed between the Villa Real Garage and Delves Lane.

The Great North Air Ambulance and North East Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene, where they treated a man before he was flown to hospital.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 80s was unharmed. The road remained closed for several hours while collision investigators inspected the scene. 

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A692 in Consett at around 4.45pm yesterday (June 22).

"The incident involved a Honda Jazz car and a Kawasaki Vulcan motorbike.

"The motorbike rider, a man in his 70s, sustained a serious leg injury and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment where he remains.

"The driver of the car, a woman in her 80s, was unharmed.

"The road was closed for several hours before being reopened at around 10pm. Enquiries are ongoing."

When the Northern Echo attended the scene there was a motorcycle in the road at the junction of the A692 and Leadgate Road. 

Four police patrol cars and a van were at the scene, along with a vehicle from the collision investigation unit. 

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A692 in Consett shortly after 4.30pm this afternoon.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, a rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient was flown to the RVI for further treatment."

Durham Police have been contacted for further information.
