A teenage girl was left with serious injuries following an alleged assault near a North East primary school, police have confirmed tonight (Thursday, June 22). 

A 23-year-old man was arrested as officers cordoned off an area outside Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School on Cargo Fleet Lane, Middlesbrough.

An area in nearby Premier Road was also reportedly cordoned off.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly after 3pm today. 

Police converged on the scene as an air ambulance landed on a field and an ambulance attended.    

Cleveland Police confirmed a 23-year-old man remained in custody tonight. 

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "A teenage girl was left with serious injuries after she was assaulted on Premier Road, in Middlesbrough, at around 3:10pm this afternoon.

"The girl was transported by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital, where she is now in a stable condition.

"A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a person injured in Cargo Fleet Lane in Middlesbrough shortly after 3pm this afternoon.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and a clinical team leader, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient has been transported to hospital for further treatment."

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "Our critical care was activated at 3.14pm to reports of an assault in Middlesbrough.

"We had two doctors and a paramedic on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 3.22pm.

"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient before they were taken to hospital by the road ambulance, accompanied by our team."
