A person has been airlifted to hospital following a serious crash involving a motorcycle in County Durham this afternoon (Thursday, June 22). 

Emergency services were called to the scene following a collision on the A692 in Consett.

The road was closed between the Villa Real Garage and Delves Lane for several hours, as officers dealt with the incident.

The Great North Air Ambulance and North East Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene, where they treated a casualty, before the person was airlifted to hospital.

The details of the collision are still not clear.

When the Northern Echo attended the scene there was a motorcycle in the road at the junction of the A692 and Leadgate Road. 

Four police patrol cars and a van were at the scene, along with a vehicle from the collision investigation unit. 

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A692 in Consett shortly after 4.30pm this afternoon.

The Northern Echo:

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, a rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient was flown to the RVI for further treatment."
