A man is hospital with serious injuries tonight (Wednesday, June 7) after a fire broke out following an incident on the site of a former steelworks.
Emergency services were called to an ‘industrial incident’ at the Teesworks site in Redcar this afternoon.
The Great North Air Ambulance and North East Ambulance Service attended to one casualty who was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries.
Another man was is also to have been caught up in the incident, but he was not seriously hurt.
A spokesperson for the South Tees Development Corporation said: "South Tees Development Corporation (STDC) was alerted on Wednesday afternoon by contractor Brown and Mason to an incident on a Teesworks site within the company’s control involving two workers during work to demolish Redcar Power Station.
"STDC supported with directing emergency services to where the incident took place."
The spokesperson added: "Our immediate concerns are with the workers involved in this incident.
“We will work closely with Brown and Mason to support a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident - the safety of all site employees will always be our first priority.
“We would like to thank emergency services for their swift and professional response.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call to 999 at 3.22pm this afternoon to reports of a person seriously injured at SSI UK on Trunk Road in Redcar.

"We sent the air ambulance, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader and an emergency ambulance crew and took the male patient to James Cook hospital for further treatment."
A Great North Air Ambulance spokesperson added|: "Our critical care team was activated at 3.43pm to reports of an industrial incident at the Teesworks site in Redcar. We had two doctors and a paramedic on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 3.59pm.
"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient and they were taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service’s road crew, accompanied by our team."
