Nobody was injured during the incident, but the store suffered significant damage and will be closed for around ten weeks while repairs are carried out.
An investigation into the blaze has been launched by officers from Durham Constabulary and they have now confirmed that they have arrested two teenage boys in connection with the incident.
The two 16-year-olds, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been interviewed by officers.
One has been released on bail, while the other has been released under investigation to allow for further enquiries to be carried out.
Sergeant Chris Davis, from Stanley Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “Deliberate fire damages communities, it damages property, but most of all it put people’s lives at risk, and we will not tolerate it. Anyone found to be setting a deliberate fire will be dealt with robustly.
