An appeal has been launched after a man was injured in an alleged assault in a County Durham alleyway.

A man was treated for injuries to his hand and arm after a suspected assault on Burn Place, Willington at 8:45pm on Monday (May 30).

The man was taken to hospital following the incident, after being treated at the scene by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS).

A cordon was put in place as officers gathered evidence.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for information following an assault in the alleyway of Burn Place, Willington, at around 8.45pm last night (May 29).

"Colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service treated a man for injuries to his hand and arm at the scene. He was taken to hospital before being released this morning.

"A cordon was put in place so officers could gather evidence."

A man has since been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.

Eyewitnesses reported the street being closed off since night. It is understood the cordon has now been lifted. 

An NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 9.03pm on Monday to reports of a person injured on Burn Place, Willington.

"We sent one emergency ambulance and transported one patient to University Hospital of North Durham for further treatment."
