The new Mayor of Darlington has said she is honoured to serve the borough she is proud to call home and loves.

Jan Cossins, Labour councillor for Cockerton, was elected at a ceremony on Thursday and will represent the borough throughout the community for the next year.

An emotional cllr Cossins thanked the council chamber for their support after she was unanimously voted into the ceremonial role.

“I grew up in Darlington and never wanted to move away - I absolutely love the place,” cllr Cossins told the ceremony. “I went to Eastbourne Girls’ School and then went onto Darlington College. My mam was a staunch Labour woman, she worked her socks off for Ted Fletcher (our former MP).”

Although she didn’t get involved with politics until her late teens, cllr Cossins volunteered at the church in various roles, which inspired her work in the community.

She added: “I have been involved in residents groups and community partnerships when one day one resident told me to throw my hat in the ring and become a councillor. I have been honoured to serve the wonderful people of Cockerton for almost 13 years and, as mayor, am looking forward to meeting a lot more of our wonderful residents.

“I’m looking forward to my year as mayor.”
