A cyclist has died after suffering serious injuries after being hit by a minibus on a busy North East road.

The incident happened at around 11.40pm on Wednesday, May 3 when a Mercedes minibus and cyclist collided on the A694 Lockhaugh Road at the junction with Sherburn Park Drive, in the Rowlands Gill area.

The man on the bike, aged 44, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.

He was taken to hospital to receive treatment but sadly died on Sunday.

Police say the man’s next of kin are being supported by specialist officers from Northumbria Police at this time.

Officers are continuing to appeal to anyone who may have information regarding the collision to contact them.

The driver of the minibus remained at the scene following the collision to assist officers with their enquiries.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police, said: “This is an incredibly sad update and one which we hoped we would not have to deliver.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has passed away at this distressing time.
