Residents are furious at plans to build over thirty new bungalows and eight custom build plots on a greenfield site in the heart of a busy County Durham housing estate.
Plans submitted to the council in late March detail 32 new “affordable” bungalows planned to be built on a playing field on land south of Greenways Court in Delves Lane, Consett, with eight custom build sites.
As plans are now being considered, residents have taken to Durham County Council’s planning website to express their anger at the “ludicrous” proposals.

Mrs Denise Dickinson of Greenways, stated in an official objection that the area cannot cope with the new houses and the pressure it would place on the community.
She said: “I wish to formally object against this ludicrous proposal on a small playing and dog walking field right next to an old people's home with limited access to roads and facilities in the village.
“In addition, there is a plan already which we as residents objected to for almost 300 houses in the same area - residents cannot cope with yet another land grabbing development right outside their gardens and homes.”
Susan Huntsman, a resident of Delves Lane, has also taken to the site to object, stating the village is under “immense” pressure.
She said: “This village has been subjected to numerous housing developments over the last few years and already has Miller Homes developing 288 houses adjacent to this proposal.
“The village is already under immense pressure the infrastructure is not able to cope now without further disruption.”
In a formal complaint on the planning portal, one resident claimed the land was under a covenant – meaning new houses cannot be built on the land.

The Northern Echo has contacted Durham County Council for comment to confirm or deny this covenent.
These latest plans come as 288 new homes were approved by Durham County Council earlier this year on land that is immediately adjacent to the new site – meaning the area could see 328 new homes should these newest plans be approved.
Miller Homes will build the 288 homes across three fields across the 17.7-hectare site.
