A lamppost has been left in the middle of a pavement by a ‘jobsworth in a hurry’, who locals complain the placement blocks wheelchairs, prams and mobility scooters.

The post, which was put up in Cayton, North Yorkshire, was planted in the middle of a section of pavement despite others on the street being placed next to the road.

Residents have been left fuming, reportedly the latest in a string of buildings works to have affected their properties in recent years.

Resident Barbara Davies, 70, described the placement of the lamppost as a ‘disgrace’

She said: "It is a disgrace. Wheel chairs and mobility scooters cannot get round it and neither can mums with prams.

"Someone will have to come and move it. I don’t know when it is going to happen but I expect the public will be paying it.’

Gareth Taylor said: "I feel so bad for the residents of that row of houses. They’ve had to put up with years of having the front of their houses dug up, constant traffic lights and new builds ruining what was once a lovely country lane.

"Now this monstrosity fitted by a jobsworth in a hurry."

The new street lights were installed as part of a new housing development being built in the area which has already led to ill feeling among local residents.

Becky Gillon added: "If you look at the placement of the one before, I genuinely can’t fathom why whoever put it in thought it was a good idea."

Meanwhile Sue Ainsworth added: "Don’t they know [the pavement] is for people with prams, wheelchairs and disabled scooters?"

North Yorkshire Council has been contacted for comment.
