Fire crews tackled a horror house blaze on Tuesday afternoon with residents hearing loud bangs.

The incident happened on Silverdale Road in Cramlington, Northumberland with black smoke seen rising from the home where the incident occurred.

One resident told The Echo: “I heard some loud bangs, a bit like gunshots, and came out to see what was happening and the house at the top of the street was on fire.

“There was black smoke, it was quite scary.

“A lady called the fire brigade, and it looks like everyone got out fine, thankfully.”

The incident happened at around 2.30pm.

Pictures show what appears to be the front of a black SUV and the garage of the property on fire with thick smoke rising from the blaze.

Three fire engines and police all attended the scene with a cordon in place in part of the street.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said: “We can confirm this is an ongoing incident and a residential fire at Silverdale Road, Cramlington.

“The road is not currently shut; however, we would ask that everyone avoids this area, not just for their own safety, but to avoid road congestion at this hour.

“This is a protracted incident.”

Police confirmed they were in attendance to support the fire service. The ambulance service did not attend.
