A body has been found following a search for a missing North East man who was last seen in a residential street. 

Northumbria Police have confirmed they have found a body in the search for Jason Cross, 34, of Sunderland, who was last seen in the South View Terrace area of Houghton-le-Spring at around 3.30pm on Saturday (May 13).

They said the body was found on Monday (May 15) evening in the Sunderland area after police carried out an extensive search.

His family had reported him missing after not hearing from him.

Police have said formal identification has yet to take place but they believe this to be Jason.

They said his family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers at this devastating time.

Detective Sergeant John Baines, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an incredibly tragic outcome and certainly an update that we hoped not to deliver.

“Our thoughts remain with Jason’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.

Police do not believe there to be any third-party involvement in his death and a report will now be made for the coroner.
