Another North East pub is up for sale after chiefs at the pub group that owned it decided that it had no “long-term sustainable future”.

The Three Crowns pub, located on Archer Street in Darlington, went up for sale as it did not have a “long-term sustainable future”, despite the licensee not wanting the establishment to close.

Admiral Taverns, who owns around 1,600 community pubs up and down the country, put the pub up for sale, with a sale expected to go through when the current licensee leaves the premises in June.

A spokesperson from Admiral Taverns explained their decision.

They said: “We are strong believers in the importance of community pubs and our focus is always on helping our licensees to run sustainable pub businesses.

“After careful consideration, however, we felt in this instance that the Three Crowns did not have a long-term sustainable future and therefore we’ve taken the decision put the pub up for sale."

Daniel Lowe, the licensee at The Three Crowns, said: “It wasn’t my decision to close [the pub], I was given my notice to terminate as Admiral had decided to sell the pub.”

Daniel is set to leave The Three Crowns on June 1, at which point it will close whilst the sale of the property goes through. It is unknown what the next owner is set to do with the premises.

However, Daniel is now leasing the former Bondgate Tavern site, which reopened on Friday (May 12), with no pub group involved.
