One of the most historic buildings in the North East has been named among one of the most Googled free attractions in the UK according to new research.
Durham Cathedral landed the fourth spot in the ‘top 10 most Googled free attractions in the UK’ by outdoor experts Go Outdoors.
The company found that under the search term ‘Durham Cathedral’, there were 333,700 annual searches in the UK from January to December 2022.
Using various data sources, such as social media hashtags, visitor attendance records and popular search terms, Go Outdoors has revealed some of the most popular cost-effective activities to try out this year with the family.

What else did the research reveal about Durham Cathedral?
The research provided by Go Outdoors also found the following:
- In 2021, Durham Cathedral received over 251,456 visitors, the 11th most in the UK
- 78 per cent of Durham Cathedral’s Tripadvisor reviews are ‘excellent’
- Durham Cathedral has been named the most Instagrammable free attraction in the UK with over 76,000 hashtagged posts
