HSBC and Barclays to close Whitley Bay and North Yorkshire branches

Banks are continuing to push forward with the move to online banking, with more branches set to pull down the shutters.

The number of people using in-person services has been falling for years as more people switch to digital.

Three branches are set to close in the space of eight days within the next week, as EIGHTEEN close in the North East this year, leaving thousands of customers without a branch nearby.

One Barclays branch and one HSBC bank will close in the coming days.

HSBC, Whitley Bay – May 2

HSBC will close its Whitley Bay branch at 279 Whitley Road on Tuesday (May 2).

The banking giant said the decision to close a branch is “is never easy or taken lightly”, announcing the news back in December last year.

The closure was met by opposition from locals including councillors who said they were “really disappointed” by the decision.

NatWest will also close its branch in Whitley Bay later this year on July 20.

Barclays, Leyburn – May 5

Barclays announced in January that its Leyburn branch will pull down the shutters for the final time on Friday (May 5). It follows the closure of the Bedale bank last week (April 26) leaving the whole of Wensleydale without any bank branches.

Figures released by Barclays revealed that only 19 customers used the Leyburn branch as their only way of banking.

It means the nearest branch will now be in Richmond, almost 20 minutes away.

• South Shields, South Tyneside – NE33 1NW – closing June 14
• Gosforth, Newcastle – NE3 1HE – closing July 18
