B&M announces closure of Bishop Auckland store next month

The bargain brand’s Bishop Auckland store will pull down the shutters for the final time in less than three weeks on Friday May 5.

In a statement posted online the company said: “Unfortunately your B&M Bishop Auckland store at 4 Saddler Street will close on Friday 5th May 2023.

“We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of this closure.”

It means the town's nearest store will now be in Shildon, County Durham.

B&M on Saddler Street, Bishop Auckland will close next month.

B&M sells a wide range of products at discounted prices, including furniture, toys, and electricals, and frozen food and cupboard essentials.

It becomes the second site in the North East to close this year after the chain’s Castlegate Shopping Centre venue in Stockton shut at the end of March.

Locations in Newport, Bristol and Kilmarnock have also closed this year.

The closures come despite “very good performance” over the Christmas period which saw the company’s revenues grow by almost an eighth.

However, it is planning to open new stores in other locations across the country.

Last December the Echo revealed plans for B&M to open a new shop and garden centre in the former Gala Bingo unit at the busy Manor Walks retail park in Cramlington, Northumberland.

Supermarket Iceland also closed its doors in Bishop Auckland last November as it opened a new site under its Food Warehouse brand.
