This weekend, a new ITV drama titled The Hunt for Raoul Moat which tells the story of one of the North East’s most infamous criminal cases will air on TV.

It’s been 13 years since former bouncer Raoul Moat from Newcastle went on a shooting spree in the region before going on the run for more than a week - sparking one of the biggest manhunts in British history.

He shot his ex-partner Samantha Stobbart, her new partner Christopher Brown and PC David Rathband all within 24 hours.

Shortly before the incident, Moat had been serving an 18-week prison sentence at HMP Durham for assaulting a nine-year-old family member.

Throughout the manhunt, sniper teams, 160 armed officers, helicopters, dogs and armoured anti-terrorist vehicles were all deployed during the chase to find Moat, ITV reports.

After being cornered and a six-hour standoff with the police in Rothbury, Northumberland, Moat died by suicide and was pronounced dead at the scene on July 10, 2010.

When is The Hunt for Raoul Moat on TV?

The Hunt for Raoul Moat is a three-part series and will be on ITV1 on April 16, 17 and 18 at 9pm each evening.

Following this, a documentary about the manhunt will also be broadcast by ITV on April 19 at 9pm.

What is The Hunt for Raoul Moat about?

The true crime drama released by ITV about the incident in 2010 will follow the point of view of Moat’s victims.

According to ITV, it will focus on the idea of domestic violence and how Northumbria Police and the probation services dealt with Moat.

The series will also look at topics including patterns of coercive control and domestic abuse.

The Hunt for Raoul Moat has been produced by World Productions, part of ITV Studios, acclaimed producers of Anne, Line of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders and Vigil, in association with MultiStory Media.

Kevin Sampson, who has written the drama adaptation, was in Corbridge at the time.

It has been commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, who will oversee production on behalf of the channel.

Who will play Raoul Moat in The Hunt for Raoul Moat?

Moat will be played by North East actor Matt Stokoe, who is from Durham.

ITV reports the drama will not focus on former Spurs and England footballer Paul Gascoigne's role in events, which the makers said would trivialise the tragedy.

Gascoigne made headlines at the time when he arrived in Rothbury to speak to Moat during the stand-off with the police.
