Darlington Market will be music to the ears of jazz lovers after it was confirmed talented musical acts from across the North East will perform every Saturday at its newly launched 1920s-themed bar, The Vault.
The decadent bar is home to everything from a baby grand piano to top quality craft beers, real ale, creative cocktails, small plates, and charcuterie, and is the latest venue launched from operators Market Asset Management (Darlington) Ltd (MAM) in partnership with Darlington Borough Council for the market hall to grow as a modern market combining food, retail, and live entertainment destination.
Now, after a launch on March 31 which saw the bar full to capacity and customers soak up an array of 1920s-themed entertainment including jazz singers, burlesque performances and flapper girls, MAM has confirmed it will showcase the best local talent by welcoming jazz trios to the bar every Saturday from 6pm to 8pm, with all performances free to attend.
MAM’s Darlington general manager, Michael Harvey, said: “As soon as news of the bar came out I was approached by jazz musicians wanting to perform in our stunning new venture so we have decided to add jazz trios from Darlington and across the North East to our packed entertainment calendar at the market meaning visitors to The Vault can not only drink and eat in wonderful surroundings but enjoy jazz trios every Saturday.”

The bar, which opens Thursdays 3pm to 10pm, 12pm to 11pm Fridays and Saturdays and 12pm to 8pm on a Sunday is the centrepiece of the transformational works at the much-loved market.
Phase 2 of the redevelopment which began in August 2022 also includes revamped shop front and entrances, a new shop floor café, new public and trader toilets on the ground floor and new toilets to the basement.
The market team describes the bar as “a cavern of historic and industrial splendour offset with glamorous, velvet furnishing, softening the historic edges.”
Michael said it was clear from feedback from the launch weekend that The Vault, which he says will be home to regular burlesque and cabaret performances, was a hit.

He said: “It is something different, offering some escapism and sophistication. The launch was a big success, and we were full to capacity with a wonderful bustling atmosphere and sea of colour from those giving fantastic performances.”
The market has remained fully open during the second phase of the development with minimum disruption to traders and shoppers.
Works have seen the exterior of the building revamped with a new black and cream colour scheme replacing the old green one complete with traditional handwritten signage lovingly crafted by local artist and sign writer Ste Robson.
An old walled-off area has been demolished to create a new glazed space which will be complemented with a new café.
The new chapter follows the first phase of the revamp which opened to the public in August 2021.
