The North East has no shortage of brilliant chippies – and The Northern Echo readers have submitted some of their favourites for a fish supper on Good Friday.
If you’re after crispy cod, mushy peas, and mountains of chips, then look no further than this round-up of reader recommendations.
Yarm Road Fish and Chips, 366 Yarm Road, Darlington, DL1 1XL
Though fish and chips shops are not in scarce supply, Yarm Road chippy has come highly accoladed by readers. One recommendation said “I struggled to find decent fish and chips for a while in Darlington. I’ve been using Yarm Road since my regular closed for work on the train station, and it’s absolutely spot on.”

The Famous Fish Pan, 28 Foreshore Road, Scarborough, YO11 1PB
The Fish Famous Pan in Scarborough came highly recommended – though of by some “best chippy” in a fish and chip-centric town. A quick look at TripAdvisor shows you why – the views, the service, and least of all the food, are all praised by pleased customers.
The Magpie Café, 14 Pier Road, Whitby, YO21 3PU
As a seafood restaurant rather than a chippy, Magpie Café is an upmarket option – but their fish and chips are a menu staple. They even come recommended by the Waitrose Good Food Guide, and Restaurant Guru.
Bradleys Fish and Chips, 299, High Street, Northallerton, DL7 8DW
A relative newcomer, Bradleys Traditional Fish and Chip Shop in Northallerton has made an impact on customers in North Yorkshire. One said, “It’s not been open long, but has fabulous fish and chips!”

Bartlett Street Fish Shop, 1 Bartlett Street, High Coniscliffe, DL3 6NB
Another Darlington recommendation, readers could not get enough of Bartlett Street Fish Shop – which was branded “lush”, and “the best by far”.
Bells Fish Shop, 11 Market Place, Durham, DH1 3NE
A consistent favourite of many Durham natives, Bells Chip Shop – loved for their “fresh and crispy” offerings. The restaurant and takeaway are set to be in full swing on Friday serving up delicious fish suppers to the residents of Durham.
