A Northallerton pub has been named as one of just three Community Pub Heroes in a national competition.

Organised by PubAid and the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group and sponsored by Matthew Clark, the competition is a charity fundraiser.

The Beeswing Inn in East Cowton near Northallerton was named a Community Pub Hero and the trophy was presented to The Beeswing’s landlady Beth Robinson at an awards ceremony at the House of Commons on March 28.

The awards were attended by other Community Pub Hero awards finalists, MPs and competition judges.

Beeswing Inn was also given £500 from Matthew Clark and PubAid, to donate to a charity of its choosing.

Owned by Punch Pubs, the award was given for The Beeswing’s charity fundraising.

Since 2014, the pub has organised a music festival, which has grown over the years to become Cowtonbury, a well-known event locally that raises huge amounts for charity.

A major beneficiary is the local hospital and since 2018 the pub has raised £64,000 to improve the palliative care facilities.

They have also fundraised for local hospices and for people in need in the local community.

Beth Robinson, licensee at The Beeswing, said: “We’re ecstatic about this win! Today has been a brilliant day, as on our way to this presentation we learned that building is going to start on a new hospice suite at Northallerton Friarage Hospital, which we are funding.

“This has been our goal ever since my dad passed away at the Friarage and it’s going to make such a difference, enabling families to stay with their loved ones at the end.”
