When Fat Hippo released “The Big D’oh”, a burger combining the award-winning Project D Homer doughnut with a burger, as The Northern Echo’s resident The Simpsons fan and expert, it was only fitting that I went to try it out.
Donning my favourite Simpsons hat to prove that I meant business, I made my way up to Newcastle on a dull and dreary Saturday to re-enact my favourite Homer Simpson job as a food critic.
Priced at £13.50 with special chilli and lime fries, The Big D’oh is a bit on the pricey side for an experimental taste, but as a huge lover of doughnuts and burgers, it was worth the price tag.
Sitting on a metal table with exposed brick walls and classic indie music playing in the background I was transported back to my student days, and I was very much here for it.
As I had made the trip for one reason and one reason only I didn’t deviate from the burger, however, I did, on recommendation from our very own Phoebe Abruzzese, treat myself to the Love Me Blender, a milkshake inspired by Elvis Presley’s favourite sandwich. Packed with banana, peanut butter and topped with crispy bacon, it’s the perfect sweet and savoury accompaniment to the kerfuffle offered by the burger.

When my burger arrived, it’s easy to see why Fat Hippo decided to collaborate with Project D. The radioactive pink icing is a perfect nod to the doughnut's inspiration and the fried chicken and cream cheese and jam would make even Homer Simpson gargle in gluttony.
The whole burger is transcendent, possibly something you would see on the menu in Krusty Burger itself, and the sweet icing and jam combined with the salty fried chicken is reminiscent of the all-American classic chicken and waffles.
The chilli and lime fries that accompany the burger provide a subtle heat to cut through the sweetness, and of course as a true millennial, I had to get a hot honey sauce to dip my chips into.
There wasn’t a crumb left after I’d finished and if I had to critique one thing, it would be that the chicken could have been slightly bigger and more tender. I left Fat Hippo intending to enjoy the rest of my day shopping, but after eating what I expect to what was close to 4,000 calories, the only thing I wanted to do was make my way to the nearest gym (if you know you know).
