The Northern Echo: Guru in Blackwellgate, Darlington

1. The many mysteries of the Guru of Blackwell Gate

Since 1990, No 24 Blackwellgate has been the home of the unique Guru boutique. Guru’s lease is expiring in June and Beryl Hankin and her team are taking the business online, so the building’s owner has this week put its bricks, mortar and cast iron on the market.

2. Weekend Walks: Bolton Castle, Aysgarth Falls and a walk along the Ure

With the days lengthening (at last) now is the perfect time to include some longer walks.

This one through the heart of Wensleydale includes Bolton Castle, Aysgarth Falls, riverside walking and some attractive typical Dales villages.

Head across the fields from Redmire towards the village of Castle Bolton. 3. Family claim West Park hospital, Darlington, was 'compassionless'

The family of a man who took his own life have spoken out about the “compassionless” care he received whilst in hospital.

Matthew Gale, 37, died on Sunday, March 19, after leaving West Park Hospital in Darlington, where he was undergoing treatment for chronic ill mental health.

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) NHS Foundation Trust have said that they will carry out a “full review” of Matthew’s care.

These allegations come only days after a damning report into the mental health provision at a different hospital previously run by TEWV was released, finding some areas of care to be “ultimately damaging to patients”.

The Northern Echo: Eating Out at the Governors House on the Treadmills development in Northallerton

4. Eating Out: Breakfast at The Governors House in Northallerton – and Oyatsu café

Breakfast wars are raging in Northallerton.

Forgive the touch of hyperbole. It is just a reflection of the fever-pitch nature of foodie competition in the county town right now.

A few weeks ago, yet another new restaurant opened, and there are more to come (three no less!!!) with the opening of the new cinema at the Treadmills development of the old prison site.

The latest opening in what was the governor’s house of Northallerton Prison, is called, with a refreshing lack of pretension but a depressing lack of punctuation, Governors House.
