A grant of nearly £975,000 in improvement funding will make a “huge difference” to a County Durham attraction.

Bowes Museum, located just outside Barnard Castle, was awarded the grant through the Museum Estate Development fund.

The “much-needed” funds are reported to be used to improve visitor access and parking, in work that will be carried out from July to December this year.

The museum's executive director, Hannah Fox, said: "We are delighted to be awarded this funding, which will allow us to carry out a million-pound project that will make a huge difference to everyone's enjoyment of the museum. 

“It will vastly improve accessibility and the visitor experience in and around the building and grounds ensuring inclusivity and access for all."

Detailed plans show that the money will be allocated to install better drainage in the property, low energy LED lighting, step-free access to the museum and wayfinding signage.

The grade II listed property includes a vast collection of art and decorative objects including paintings, ceramics, sculptures and textiles.

Established over 100 years ago by husband and wife Josephine and John Bowes, their collection is said to be one of the greatest in the North of England.

The historic attraction is popular all year round, with locals flocking to the location for its esteemed Christmas Markets.
