A man has been hospitalised with serious injuries and a woman charged by police after a suspected stabbing in Darlington.

Officers were called to reports of a stabbing at an address in Burnet Drive, Darlington at about 11am on Sunday (March 19) morning.

A man in his twenties was found with serious injuries and taken to hospital.

Residents recalled seeing a heavy emergency service presence with police cars and ambulances descending on the street.

The air ambulance was also seen coming in to land nearby at Darlington College shortly after 11am.

Police carried out door-to-door enquiries as an investigation was launched into the incident.

A 31-year-old woman was arrested by officers and has since been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. She has been remanded in custody pending a court appearance.

The man has been released from hospital after being treated for his injuries.

A Great North Air Ambulance spokesperson confirmed the chopper was called to reports of an assault.

They added: “We arrived on scene at 11.06am and two of our paramedics and a doctor worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat a patient.

“The patient was taken to hospital by the NEAS road crew, accompanied by our team.”
