A woman has died after her car crashed into road sign on Wednesday (March 22).

She was driving a small white Citroen car when it collided with a road sign at about 9.30am on Wednesday morning.

Police, paramedics, fire crews and the air ambulance were all called to the scene on Upgang Lane in Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Despite the best efforts of emergency crews the woman tragically died.

Officers are yet to confirm her name, although her family have been informed and North Yorkshire police say they are receiving specialist support.

Police have now launched an investigation and are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage of the incident, to come forward.

A force spokesperson added: “We thank motorists and residents for their patience and understanding during this time.

“To help the collision investigation, we're urging witnesses, motorists with relevant dash-cam footage and nearby homeowners with CCTV and doorbell cameras, to come forward to the police without delay.
