A huge fire and rescue service response was spotted at York Racecourse, on Knavesmere Road, over the last two days, leaving many wondering what could have happened.
Some worried that there had been a major incident on the racecourse, as fire engines, ambulances, and even a helicopter were seen responding to “explosions and gunfire”
The emergency services have residents’ fears by confirming it was a major training exercise, run by the Home Office.

The exercise simulated a “major terrorist incident”, and included staff from North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “A large emergency presence near York Racecourse yesterday was due to a two-day large scale multi-agency exercise led by the Home Office.
“We were testing the joint response of the government and emergency services to a major terrorist incident.
“The exercise is now over but we will continue to review and implement any learning from the day."
