Major fast-food retailer Popeyes has unveiled its first ever breakfast menu with a trial now underway at two UK stores, including its Metrocentre venue.

The Louisiana chicken restaurant has chosen the Metrocentre as one of two locations to pilot its first ever breakfast menu from Tuesday (March 14).

Breakfast rolls and muffins, Cajun hash browns, and American-style ‘biscuits’ topped with cinnamon sugar or Nutella are all on the menu.

The brand opened its first North East venue at the Metrocentre last year August with crowds of eager fans gathering from 2am for the official ribbon cutting.

And big queues are expected at the Metrocentre again on Saturday (March 18) as the chain is planning to give away 50 free muffins to the first 50 customers in the queue, from 8am.

Neil Williamson, Popeyes’ Newcastle-born UK Chief Operating Officer said: “I am delighted to announce our Metrocentre restaurant has been selected as one of the first two sites to trial our brand-new breakfast menu.

“When we launched here last summer, our customers gave Popeyes such a huge, warm welcome to the region and helped this to become one of our most successful launches to date. Because of this, we knew we wanted to involve them in our menu expansion and give them the chance to try Popeyes breakfast first.

 “Most global brands that come across to the UK are keen to take over the south first and often don’t consider the north until years later. As a Geordie, I always wanted to establish Popeyes up north in the early stages of our UK expansion, and here we are again with the expansion of our menu to launch Popeyes breakfast.”

A store in Oxford has also been chosen for the menu trial.

The new breakfast menu will be available until 11am each day.

Last September the brand also submitted plans for a drive-thru restaurant in South Tyneside at the Boldon Leisure Park.

Here is the full new breakfast menu being trialled at Popeyes Metrocentre:

  • The big breakfast roll - sausage patty, egg, crisp streaky bacon, and American-style cheese in a bun
  • Bacon roll
  • Double or single bacon, egg and cheese muffins
  • Double or single sausage, egg and cheese muffins
  • Hash browns and Cajun hash browns
  • Cinnamon sugar buttermilk biscuits
  • Buttermilk biscuit with Nutella
  • Egg and cheese muffins
  • Tea and coffees, including lattes, flat whites and cappuccinos
