Two rising stars in the butchering industry struck gold at one of the most renowned award ceremonies in the industry.
Bryce Lawson and Calum Robinson of McMurchie Meats brought home the bacon at the Golden Cleaver awards at this year’s Harrogate butchers show on March 5.
Manager of the store, Bryce, and his apprentice Calum impressed the judges and took home best overall display in the famous Battle of the Butchers showdown.

Bryce told the Echo: “Our social media went a little bit wild! Well-wishers have been amazing.
“Our customers are good engaging with anything like this, a lot of customers were watching on the live stream and were wishing us well.”
To win, Bryce and Calum were handed surprise boxes of meats, sundries and salads to create a full display in a one-hour timeslot.
Beating out twelve other teams, the pair were judged on their cleanliness, teamwork, and efficiency in creating their final display.
Bryce, who has previously competed in similar events, was particularly proud of his apprentice Calum in his first competition.
“It’s good for me, but it’s also good for Calum, it being his first competition.
“This is just for me and Calum, the way we work, and how our work ethic in our shop has paid off.”

When asked about next year’s competition, Bryce confirmed McMurchie Meats would be going for gold once again.
He told us: “This won’t be the first and the last one, definitely not. It’s something we like to do because you come back after a competition and it gives you that drive to make the shop as brilliant as it can be.
“It’s not only winning, you walk away and you look at everybody else’s displays, you pick something up and think ‘oh, that’s a good idea!’”
