A cow in distress at a nature reserve in County Durham resulted in Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s rope rescue team being called in.
The pregnant cow was in a bad way after getting trapped in mud at Wingate Quarry last Thursday (February 23) lunchtime.
The rope rescue team was called to provide mutual aid, working together with the Durham crews, the farmer, and a local vet, we were able to free the exhausted animal from the thick mud.
It was a tricky rescue due to the cow’s pregnancy but after three hours she and her unborn calf were released without harm.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service can’t attend all animal rescues but if it is nearby and available then it will provide support.
