The number of people in the North East to never marry has been revealed by each local authority in a new map.

The data, created by the Office for National Statistics, revealed that the number of adults to have never married or been in a civil partnership has increased every decade.

In 1991 the percentage stood at 26.3% which has increased to 37.9% in 2021, whereas the proportion of adults who are married or in a civil partnership has fallen from 58.4% in 1991 to 46.9% in 2021.

In the North East, many local authorities are sitting at higher than the average for the number of adults to never marry or be in a civil partnership.

South Tyneside and Newcastle upon Tyne are the North East areas with the largest number of adults who have never married with a 40.2% of residents for both areas.

Sunderland and Middlesbrough are close behind both sitting at 39.9% respectively.

Northumberland is the local authority with the smallest number of adults to never marry or enter a civil partnership at 36.3%.

The authority leads in having the most number of adults to be married or in a civil partnership.
